What is Loto 6 (Japan)?

Loto 6 is Japan’s most traditional number lottery and is drawn twice a week, on Monday and Thursday evenings. A play costs ¥200: you pick six different numbers from 1 to 43, and each draw produces six main numbers and one bonus number used only for the second prize. The first prize is up to ¥200 million, or up to ¥600 million when there is a carry-over. With odds of about one in 6.1 million, Loto 6 has some of the best jackpot odds of any major national lottery.

How Loto 6 (Japan) works

  1. Pick six different numbers from 1–43 – your own favourites or a random Quick Pick.
  2. Check your line once the numbers are drawn – only which numbers match counts, not their order.
  3. The top prize needs all six main numbers; smaller combinations win lower prizes set by the operator.

Your chances in Loto 6 (Japan)

The draw can produce 6,096,454 different results, which means the jackpot odds for one line are 1 in 6,096,454. Lower down the table the picture changes quickly: a result of five main numbers turns up about once in 27,462 lines, and at least three correct main numbers about once in 37 lines.

In Asia, Vietlott Lotto 5/35 (1 in 3.9 million) has better odds and Lotto 6/45 (South Korea) (1 in 8.1 million) is harder. Compared with US Powerball, the jackpot is about 48 times easier to hit. Among the 88 lotteries on this site, Loto 6 (Japan) ranks number 11 for jackpot odds, where number 1 is the easiest.

Playing two lines in two draws every week – 208 lines a year – you would wait on average around 29,310 years for one jackpot, so the jackpot is something to dream about rather than plan for.

The number generator gives you up to ten Loto 6 (Japan) lines in the exact format of the game, using your browser’s cryptographic random generator. Next to it you will find the full odds table and a demo draw you can repeat as often as you like. In the demo you tap six numbers on a 43-ball board, or let Quick Pick do it.

The simulator goes further: ten years of two lines twice a week means 2,080 lines, and on average about 53 of them would match exactly three main numbers while the chance of a top prize in that time is only about 1 in 2,931. No generator can improve the odds – every combination is equally likely – but it saves time and avoids popular patterns such as birthdays.
