About Mega Millions

Mega Millions is America’s second giant multi-state jackpot game, drawn every Tuesday and Friday. In April 2025 the game was rebuilt from the ground up: the ticket price rose to $5, a random multiplier of 2x to 10x was built into every play, and the gold Mega Ball pool was cut from 25 numbers to 24. The change made the jackpot slightly easier to win and removed the old break-even prizes, so the smallest win is now $10. Because many older articles still quote the previous rules, every number on this page is based on the current 5/70 + 1/24 format.

Playing Mega Millions step by step

1. Select five different numbers from 1–70, or let a Quick Pick choose them for you.
2. Add one bonus number from 1–24. It is drawn from a separate pool, so the same value can appear in both parts of the result.
3. After the draw, count how many of your numbers appear among the winning numbers, in any order.
4. The top prize needs all five main numbers plus the bonus number; smaller combinations win lower prizes set by the operator.

Mega Millions odds explained

There are 290,472,336 possible combinations in Mega Millions, so a single line has a 1 in 290,472,336 chance of the top prize. The next-best result, five main numbers without the bonus, comes up about once every 12,629,232 lines, and matching at least three of the five main numbers happens roughly once in 573 lines.

That is almost exactly as hard as US Powerball. Among the 88 lotteries on this site, Mega Millions ranks number 85 for jackpot odds, where number 1 is the easiest. In North America, Lotto Max (1 in 99.9 million) has better odds and Powerball (1 in 292.2 million) is harder.

Playing two lines in two draws every week – 208 lines a year – you would wait on average around 1.4 million years for one jackpot, so the jackpot is something to dream about rather than plan for.
