5 from 1–39 + 1 from 1–14

Thunderball in a nutshell

Thunderball is the UK National Lottery’s fixed-prize game, run by Allwyn. Instead of a rolling jackpot, the top prize is a fixed £500,000 for matching five main numbers from 1 to 39 plus the Thunderball from 1 to 14. Because the prize does not grow, the game is built on comparatively good odds rather than headlines: around one in eight million for the top prize, and a win of some kind for roughly one in thirteen lines. Matching just the Thunderball on its own already wins a small prize.

How to play Thunderball

  1. Choose five different numbers from 1–39, or let a Quick Pick choose them for you.
  2. Add one bonus number from 1–14. It is drawn from a separate pool, so the same value can appear in both parts of the result.
  3. Wait for the draw and compare your line with the winning numbers; the order does not matter.
  4. The top prize needs all five main numbers plus the bonus number; smaller combinations win lower prizes set by the operator.

What are the odds in Thunderball?

A single Thunderball line has a 1 in 8,060,598 chance of winning the top prize – that is the number of different combinations the draw can produce. Getting at least three main numbers right is far more common, about one line in 100, while a result of five main numbers without the bonus happens about once in 620,046 lines.

Among the 88 lotteries on this site, Thunderball ranks number 15 for jackpot odds, where number 1 is the easiest. In Europe, Loto 7 (Croatia) (1 in 6.7 million) has better odds and Irish Lotto (1 in 8.1 million) is harder. Compared with US Powerball, the jackpot is about 36 times easier to hit.

Playing two lines in two draws every week – 208 lines a year – you would wait on average around 38,753 years for one jackpot, so the jackpot is something to dream about rather than plan for.

Free Thunderball tools

For a quick pick, the generator above builds random Thunderball lines – as many as ten at once – and checks that every number fits the 1–39 range. Next to it you will find the full odds table and a demo draw you can repeat as often as you like. In the demo you also choose the bonus number from 1–14, exactly as on a real slip.

The simulator goes further: ten years of two lines twice a week means 2,080 lines, and on average about 20 of them would match exactly three main numbers while the chance of a top prize in that time is only about 1 in 3,875. No generator can improve the odds – every combination is equally likely – but it saves time and avoids popular patterns such as birthdays.
