About Irish Lotto
Irish Lotto is the main game of Ireland’s National Lottery and underwent a major refresh in autumn 2026. From 5 September 2026 the balls numbered 46 and 47 were retired, so players now pick six numbers from 1 to 45, and a Monday draw was added to the existing Wednesday and Saturday draws. The smaller pool improved the jackpot odds from one in 10.7 million to one in 8.1 million. The Lotto Plus add-on still gives two extra draws with fixed top prizes, including €1 million in Lotto Plus 1.
Playing Irish Lotto step by step
- Select six different numbers from 1–45, or let a Quick Pick choose them for you.
- After the draw, count how many of your numbers appear among the winning numbers, in any order.
- The top prize needs all six main numbers; smaller combinations win lower prizes set by the operator.
Irish Lotto odds explained
There are 8,145,060 possible combinations in Irish Lotto, so a single line has a 1 in 8,145,060 chance of the top prize. The next-best result, five main numbers, comes up about once every 34,808 lines, and matching at least three of the six main numbers happens roughly once in 42 lines.
Compared with US Powerball, the jackpot is about 36 times easier to hit. Among the 88 lotteries on this site, Irish Lotto ranks number 16 for jackpot odds, where number 1 is the easiest. In Europe, Thunderball (1 in 8.1 million) has better odds and Lotto 6 aus 45 (1 in 8.1 million) has exactly the same odds.
Playing two lines in two draws every week – 208 lines a year – you would wait on average around 39,159 years for one jackpot, so the jackpot is something to dream about rather than plan for.
