What is Lotto (South Africa)?

Lotto is South Africa’s original National Lottery game, launched in 2000 and drawn on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. Since 1 June 2026 the lottery has been run by Sizekhaya Holdings, which took over from Ithuba and reduced the Lotto ball pool from 58 to 52 numbers from 3 June. A board costs R5, and players can add Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2 for extra chances. The new format improved the jackpot odds to one in 20.4 million, and lottery winnings in South Africa are tax-free.

How Lotto (South Africa) works

  1. Pick six different numbers from 1–52 – your own favourites or a random Quick Pick.
  2. Check your line once the numbers are drawn – only which numbers match counts, not their order.
  3. The top prize needs all six main numbers; smaller combinations win lower prizes set by the operator.

Your chances in Lotto (South Africa)

The draw can produce 20,358,520 different results, which means the jackpot odds for one line are 1 in 20,358,520. Lower down the table the picture changes quickly: a result of five main numbers turns up about once in 73,763 lines, and at least three correct main numbers about once in 64 lines.

In Africa, Daily Lotto (South Africa) (1 in 376,992) has better odds and PowerBall (South Africa) (1 in 33.9 million) is harder. Compared with US Powerball, the jackpot is about 14 times easier to hit. Among the 88 lotteries on this site, Lotto (South Africa) ranks number 49 for jackpot odds, where number 1 is the easiest.

Playing two lines in two draws every week – 208 lines a year – you would wait on average around 97,878 years for one jackpot, so the jackpot is something to dream about rather than plan for.

Free Lotto (South Africa) tools

For a quick pick, the generator above builds random Lotto (South Africa) lines – as many as ten at once – and checks that every number fits the 1–52 range. The odds tab breaks down every possible result, while the demo draw runs a realistic draw with your own numbers. In the demo you tap six numbers on a 52-ball board, or let Quick Pick do it.

The simulator goes further: ten years of two lines twice a week means 2,080 lines, and on average about 31 of them would match exactly three main numbers while the chance of a top prize in that time is only about 1 in 9,788. No generator can improve the odds – every combination is equally likely – but it saves time and avoids popular patterns such as birthdays.
