About Oz Lotto
Oz Lotto is Australia’s first truly national lottery, launched in 1994 and drawn every Tuesday night by The Lott. Players choose seven numbers from 1 to 47, and supplementary numbers drawn from the same barrel decide some lower divisions. Matching all seven main numbers wins Division 1, at odds of about one in 62.9 million. Oz Lotto jackpots are among the largest in the country, second only to Powerball.
Playing Oz Lotto step by step
- Select seven different numbers from 1–47, or let a Quick Pick choose them for you.
- After the draw, count how many of your numbers appear among the winning numbers, in any order.
- The top prize needs all seven main numbers; smaller combinations win lower prizes set by the operator.
Oz Lotto odds explained
There are 62,891,499 possible combinations in Oz Lotto, so a single line has a 1 in 62,891,499 chance of the top prize. The next-best result, six main numbers, comes up about once every 224,612 lines, and matching at least four of the seven main numbers happens roughly once in 174 lines.
Compared with US Powerball, the jackpot is about 4.6 times easier to hit. Among the 88 lotteries on this site, Oz Lotto ranks number 77 for jackpot odds, where number 1 is the easiest. In Oceania, Lotto Powerball (New Zealand) (1 in 38.4 million) has better odds and Powerball (Australia) (1 in 134.5 million) is harder.
Playing two lines in two draws every week – 208 lines a year – you would wait on average around 302,363 years for one jackpot, so the jackpot is something to dream about rather than plan for.
Using the Oz Lotto tools on this page
Start with the generator: it produces random Oz Lotto lines in the correct format, from one line to ten, and you can copy them in one click. The odds tab lists every match combination, and the demo lets you pick numbers and watch a simulated draw. In the demo you tap seven numbers on a 47-ball board, or let Quick Pick do it.
The simulator goes further: ten years of two lines twice a week means 2,080 lines, and on average about 106 of them would match exactly three main numbers while the chance of a top prize in that time is only about 1 in 30,236. A random line is no luckier than your favourite numbers, yet it spreads your picks across the whole range instead of the 1–31 that birthday players crowd into.
